Gem of the Garden Route
Wilderness is one of the gems of the Garden
Route, which stretches for 230kms from Mossel Bay to Storms
River. On one side is the Indian Ocean and along its shore
a delightful assortment of beaches and cliffs. Inland are the
wooded slopes of the Tsitsikamma and Outeniqua mountains with
forests, deep valleys, spectacular mountain passes, rivers
and waterfalls.
Wilderness is located on the banks of the lagoon
at the Touw river mouth and forms part of a chain of five lakes
stretching for 40km along the coast to Knysna. Most of the
Wilderness area is administered and protected by the National
Parks Board to ensure the preservation of its natural beauty
and wonderful flora and fauna. There are many interesting walking
trails and bird hides in the park. The area is something of a golfer’s paradise with many
prestigious courses in George, Herold’s Bay, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
